Services Overview
In addition to case funding, the Student Legal Fund Society provides the following services to students of the University of British Columbia's Vancouver campus.
Lawyer Referral Subsidy
The Student Legal Fund Society (SLFS) is pleased to provide a subsidy of $25 to all registered UBC students as a first step towards receiving professional advice to settle your legal problems. You can learn more about the LRS here. This subsidy is on a refund basis, and you will need to provide the SLFS with a receipt and fill out a brief application before funds can be released to you.
Know Your Tenancy Rights Workshop
Our Know Your Tenancy Rights workshop is held every academic year and is designed to guide first time renters in B.C through the rental housing process. This workshop will help students identify their rental needs, in addition to understanding their individual rights and responsibilities as a renter. This workshop will also present fundamental resources used for disputing and/or managing rental problems.
Know Your Civil Rights Workshop
The SLFS is pleased to offer an interactive and engaging workshop by David Eby, a member of our BC Democratic Party MLA for Vancouver. While the speaker changes every year, our Know Your Civil Rights workshop is held every academic year and is aimed at educating students about police and arrest, in addition to their individual legal civil rights in B.C. We are working hard to ensure that the SLFS is as accessible and transparent as possible. Our offices are located in the new AMS Student Nest, Room 3306, and we would be pleased to sit down with you and discuss your situation either by appointment, or at one of our office hours:
- Monday 11:00AM-4:00AM
- Wednesday - 11:00AM-1:00PM and 3:00PM-5:00 PM
- Friday 12:00PM-2:30PM

Transparency & Accountability
The Student Legal Fund Society collects a $1 fee from every UBC student as part of your mandatory fee payments each year. We strive to spend our annual budget responsibly and transparently, and with over a half million dollars of fees held in reserve, the SLFS is one of the largest not-for-profit organizations at UBC.
